Tap to Pay on Android — Temporary Fix

We are aware of an issue that may cause Tap to Pay to temporarily stop working for some Android users, particularly when selling on back-to-back days. We've worked with Square to identify the cause, and a permanent fix is in progress.

What you may see

When this issue occurs, you may see:

  • "Connect Hardware to Take Payments"

  • No payment hardware connected

  • Tap to Pay may not appear as an available payment option

  • Tap to Pay may have worked previously but suddenly stops working

This issue is temporary and may resolve on its own within a few hours. If you need to begin taking payments immediately, follow the steps below.

Fix Tap to Pay Immediately

You will need to clear the Trail's End App's storage/data and then sign back into the app.

Important: Clearing only the app's cache will not resolve this issue. You must select Clear Storage or Clear Data.

Step 1: Open the Trail's End App settings

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.

  2. Tap Apps.

  3. Find and select Trail's End.

Depending on your Android phone, you may need to tap See all apps before finding Trail's End.

  • Alternatively you can long press on the app and tap the info icon

Step 2: Clear the app's storage

  1. Tap Storage or Storage & cache.

  2. Tap Clear Storage or Clear Data.

  3. Confirm when prompted.

  4. You must clear storage not just the cache

On Samsung phones

Go to:

Settings → Apps → Trail's End → Storage → Clear data

On Google Pixel phones

Go to:

Settings → Apps → See all apps → Trail's End → Storage & cache → Clear storage

Step 3: Restart the Trail's End App

  1. Open the Trail's End App again.

  2. Sign back into your account.

  3. Return to your sale and try Tap to Pay again.

Tap to Pay should now be available.

Why is this happening?

We've identified an issue with the connection between the Trail's End App and Square that can occur during a small window when someone has used Tap to Pay on consecutive days.

Because of the timing of the issue, it can appear inconsistent. Some users will never experience it, while others may find that Tap to Pay stops working temporarily and then begins working again later without making any changes.

Clearing the Trail's End App's storage forces the app to establish a fresh connection with Square and immediately resolves the issue.

Permanent Fix

We've worked with Square to isolate the issue and are preparing an update with a permanent fix.

We currently expect the updated Trail's End App to be available **by Thursday, August 27, 2026, (**this is an estimate and dependent upon Google Play review times and the Square fix timeline)

What if I'm still experiencing issues?
