Square Reader Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting steps for a Bluetooth or plug-in Square Reader that isn't working with the Trail's End App® — covers general fixes, Bluetooth pairing issues, plug-in connector problems, and when to switch to Tap to Pay or manual card entry instead.

Updated this week

If your Square Reader is not working with the Trail’s End App®, try the steps below.

✅ Note: If you are unable to use a Square Reader, you can still accept credit cards by manually entering card information in the Trail’s End App®.

Tap to Pay Troubleshooting

If Tap to Pay is not working, please review the platform-specific guides:

General Troubleshooting (All Readers)

Start with these steps, as many issues are resolved here:

  • Confirm your device is supported.

  • Make sure all required permissions are enabled for the Trail’s End App®.

  • Turn app permissions off, then back on again.

  • Update the Trail’s End App® to the latest version.

  • Delete and reinstall the Trail’s End App®.

Bluetooth Square Reader Troubleshooting

If you are using a Bluetooth Square Reader:

  1. Turn Bluetooth off on your device, then turn it back on.

  2. Forget the Square Reader in your phone’s Bluetooth settings.

  3. Restart the Square Reader:

    • Hold the button for 10–15 seconds until the lights turn red.

  4. Pair the reader again inside the Trail’s End App® (not in phone Bluetooth settings).

  5. Check if anyone else paired the reader to their phone and have them “forget” it as well.

  6. Ensure the Trail’s End App® has permission to access nearby devices.

Plug-In Square Reader Troubleshooting

If you are using a plug-in reader:

  • Confirm the Trail’s End App® has access to your device’s microphone (required to detect the reader).

  • Remove your phone case and firmly plug in the reader.

  • Check the connector (headphone jack, USB-C, or Lightning port) for lint or debris and carefully clean it.

  • Wipe the reader’s metal connector with a cloth to remove residue.

  • Check for corrosion in the connector (green discoloration may indicate damage).

  • Clean the card slot using a card reader cleaning card or a folded paper towel.
