How to Turn Storefront Cash Into Credit

If you collect cash during a Storefront shift, you can use Cash to Credit in the Trail’s End App to convert those cash sales into Credit transactions.

Written by Trail's End

To use Cash to Credit, you need a debit or credit card to complete the conversion. If you don't normally use a bank that accepts cash deposits, several popular financial apps allow you to deposit physical cash at participating retail stores and then spend that balance using their debit card.

How it works

  1. Collect cash from customers during your Storefront shift.

  2. Deposit the cash into your bank account or one of the supported financial apps below.

  3. Wait until the money is available in your account.

  4. Open the Trail’s End App and select Cash to Credit.

  5. Use the debit card associated with that account to convert your cash sales to Credit.

You aren't paying for the sale twice. You're depositing the physical cash you collected into an account and then using those same funds electronically.

Apps that accept cash deposits

Availability, fees, limits, and participating stores can change. Always check the provider's app before visiting a store.

Cash App

Cash App allows eligible customers to make Paper Money Deposits at participating retailers, including locations such as Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS.
In Cash App:
Money → Deposit paper money → Find a location
At the store, show the cashier the deposit barcode from Cash App or, where supported, swipe your Cash App Card. Once processed, the money becomes available in your Cash App balance. Cash App currently charges a $1 fee per paper-money deposit.

PayPal

PayPal allows you to add cash to your PayPal Balance at 90,000+ participating retail locations, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Dollar General, 7-Eleven, Kroger, Meijer, and many others.
In PayPal:
PayPal Balance → Add Cash at Stores → Select a retailer
PayPal will generate a barcode for the cashier to scan. If you have a PayPal Debit Card, some locations also allow you to swipe the card instead.
PayPal charges up to $3.95 per cash deposit, depending on the retailer. Cash is generally added to your balance within minutes.

Chime

Chime customers can deposit cash at participating retailers across the country.
Cash deposits are currently free at Walgreens and Duane Reade. Other participating retailers, including Walmart, CVS, 7-Eleven, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and others, may charge a fee.
In Chime:
Move → Deposit cash → See locations near me
You can show the cashier the barcode generated by Chime or use your Chime card at supported retailers. Deposited funds can then be spent using your Chime debit card.

Robinhood Banking

If you have a Robinhood Checking account, Robinhood allows cash deposits at more than 7,000 participating retail locations.
In the Robinhood Banking app, search for a participating location, select it, and generate a barcode. Show the barcode to the cashier and provide your cash.
Robinhood currently charges no fee for retail cash deposits, and funds are typically available within 15 minutes. Robinhood currently limits individual cash deposits to $500, with additional daily and monthly limits.

Note: This option requires a Robinhood Checking account. A standard Robinhood investing account by itself doesn't provide this feature.

Square Checking

If you already use Square and have a Square Checking account, Square also allows cash deposits at participating retailers such as Walgreens, Dollar General, 7-Eleven, Kroger, and others.
In the Square POS app:
Banking → Checking → Add money → Cash deposit
Choose a nearby location, generate a barcode, and show it to the cashier with your cash. Square currently offers these deposits without a fee, and funds are generally available immediately in your Square Checking balance.
Square — Make a cash deposit with Square Checking
Note: Square Checking is primarily designed for Square sellers, so this option will make the most sense if you already have a Square account.

Venmo

Venmo also supports cash deposits for customers with a Venmo Mastercard Debit Card.
Currently, Venmo's in-store cash deposit option is available at participating Walmart stores. Bring your physical Venmo Debit Card and cash to a staffed register and ask the cashier to add money to your Venmo Debit Card.
Venmo currently charges a $3.74 fee for this service.

Which option should I use?

If you already have a bank account that accepts cash deposits, depositing the cash into your normal checking account and using your debit card is usually the simplest option.
If you use a financial app instead:

After depositing your cash

Once the deposited money is available:

  1. Open the Trail's End App.

  2. Go to Cash to Credit.

Important

Trail's End is not affiliated with Cash App, PayPal, Chime, Robinhood, Square, Venmo, or the participating retailers listed above. Fees, eligibility, deposit limits, processing times, and participating locations are controlled by those providers and may change. Check the provider's app or website for the latest information before making a deposit.
