How does commission work?

Types of Commission

There are two types of commission:

  • Traditional sales: In person storefront or wagon sales.
  • Online sales: Purchases from trails-end.com.

Commission rate

  • Commission rates are set by your Council, and they may differ for Traditional and Online sales.
  • You can view your commission rates in the upper right corner of the Account Summary page.
  • Note: Any bonus commissions defined by your Council apply to Traditional Sales only.

Traditional Commission

When your unit purchases products for in-person sales, your unit is billed the Retail Price minus your commission rate.

Example: If your commission rate is 30%, your unit will be billed for 70% of the retail price.

You earn your commission as you sell the product at full retail value—whether through cash or credit card transactions.

Your total Traditional Commission Earned is displayed on the Account Summary page. Click "How are these calculated?" in the upper left for details.

Online Commission

Online commission is automatically credited to your Council bill.

Your total Online Commission is displayed on the Account Summary page. Click "How are these calculated?". In the upper right, you will a line for Online Sales Commission.

Total Commission

If your unit sells all Traditional product inventory, your Total Commission is:

Traditional Commission Earned + Online Commission

If you have leftover product, your total commission will be reduced. You’ve already paid your Council for that inventory, so unsold product reduces your potential earnings.

Where IS my unit's commission? Understanding Commission vs. Payout

Your commission and your payout are not the same thing.

A payout occurs when your credits (from credit card transactions and online commissions) exceed your total bill to the Council.

Your total commission includes:

  • Your payout from Trail's End
  • Your cash sales that were not converted to credit
  • Any overpayment to your Council (e.g., if an invoice change reduces your balance after you've paid in full, your Council will refund you this amount).
  • The value of any unsold product

Additional Factors That Can Affect Your Commission

  • If you received a large amount of cash, you may have needed to make an additional payment to your Council. When calculating your earnings, subtract those payments from your total cash.
  • Some units may receive additional credits from their Council (e.g., for incentives). These reduce your bill.
  • Scout transfers between units can impact your online commission. See "How are these calculated?" for more details on Scout moves.
